onaSCADA offers a secure client/server architecture. It allows client applications to simultaneously connect and view data and also control remote processes.

onaSCADA is firewall friendly and runs a secure UDP protocol for its communications. It supports several standard protocols including MODBUS RTU/ASCII/TCP slave/master. The built-in redundancy feature of the system offers reliability and high availability. With the system's mirroring capabilities, data can be safely and securely shared in a distributed network topology. With the built-in historic database, data can be stored for several years and viewed almost instantaneously.

onaData

onaData is an application level data exchange protocol used to implement SCADA and telemetry data links. The protocol relies on onaComms, a lower level transport protocol, which reliably delivers data packets between two end points.

onaComms

onaComms is a data transport protocol that provides transport for the onaData data exchange protocol. The protocol supports two types of framing: stream framing, RS232 and packet framing, UDP transmission.

  • Connectionless communication - ideal for high latency and low bandwidth links

RTUs

onaSCADA is used to build RTUs of various sizes: ranging from a few data points to hundreds of data points. Our RTUs are custom built to meet our clients requirements.

Our RTUs are flexible and expandable: they can be built with on-board I/Os or external 3rd-party I/O modules to meet a wide range of I/O requirements. Our RTUs support wireless transmission in the 900MHz or 2.4GHz ISM band via add-on radio modules.

What is SCADA and Telemetry?

The purpose of a telemetry system is to collect data at a place that is remote or inconvenient, say an oil production offshore installation, and to relay the data to a point where the data may be evaluated, say a business onshore office. Using telemetry system, a process operator gets various measurement information about the process of interest remotely.

Telemetry system is a computer-based system used to monitor equipment in industries such as transportation, telecommunications, water and waste control, energy, oil and gas production, transportation and oil refining etc. When telemetry system is used for both data collection and control, which is usually the case in modern applications, the term SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) is used to describe the system. So, SCADA = Telemetry + Supervisory Control.

SCADA system is a computer-based system for gathering and analyzing real-time data to monitor and control equipment. Today, SCADA systems are an integral component in virtually all industrial plant and production facilities.

Key Componets of a SCADA/Telemetry System

SCADA systems utilize Control Systems: Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Process Control Systems (PCS); Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC); Remote Terminal Units (RTU); workstation computer that act as the human-machine interface (HMI); wireless technologies and so on. The RTU and the PLC perform the majority of local and remote process alarming, monitoring, data acquisition and control. In the Oil and Gas industry, PLCs and RTUs are very common.

onaSCADA and Modern Industrial SCADA and Telemetry Systems

First generation SCADA and telemetry systems adopted the architecture of mainframe computers: networks were generally non-existent and each mainframe computer stood alone. As a result, SCADA and telemetry systems were standalone systems with virtually no connectivity to other systems.

The current generation of telemetry systems employs open system architecture rather than vendor controlled proprietary architecture. Open standards eliminate a number of the limitations of previous generations of telemetry and SCADA systems. Today, a key component of the telemetry system, the RTU, is referred to as a microcomputer-based system with analogue and digital input/output interfaces to the instrumentation and control system at the remote station [RIW].

Because of the availability of "off-the-shelf" systems, SCADA and telemetry system vendors like Onacom have gradually gotten out of the hardware development business and rely on hardware system vendors such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, ABB and so on; and also rely on operating system vendors like QNX, Debian Project and Microsoft for their expertise in developing the basic computer platforms and operating system software. This means that Onacom can concentrate her development efforts in areas where she can add most value: in software development and system design. This is the typical business model of onacom. Onacom relies on experience hardware vendors for computer system hardware and data acquisition hardware but provides a robust SCADA/Telemetry software suite, the onaSCADA, that runs on the hardware.
